Belgrave’s bank holiday DJ sets under council review after 2021 noise complaints

Licencing problems may halt Belgrave’s bank holiday performances.

A popular music venue and bar in Leeds is under threat of having its bank holiday weekend plans scrapped as council are yet to decide whether or not to grant a licence for the occasion.

Belgrave Music Hall in Leeds city centre has requested a music-related licence for their bank holiday festivities, but there is concern that the request will be rejected by the council.

The licence would give the popular music venue permission to play out music into the garden area on the side of Cross Belgrave Street until 10pm from Friday 29 April – Monday 2 May 2022.

According to local reports from LeedsLive and Yorkshire Evening Post, there were two complaints about the late-night bar last May and affected residents at two nearby student apartment buildings.

Leeds city council is said to be concerned by the potential of these actions repeating themselves, leaving the environmental health team to question whether or not the licence will be granted.

At present, Belgrave Music Hall is already holds a licence to play music and sell alcohol until 4.30am at the weekends, but this is an indoor-only arrangement.

The plan is that the Belgrave bank holiday weekend will allow the venue to play music outdoors and encourage DJs to play on the side street until the licence runs out (if granted) at 10pm, before moving the rest of the sets indoors to avoid late-night disturbances.

At present, there are two performances from artists set to play over the weekend: including northern talent Novelist, with support from Black Josh, Legion IV, D5, Laeeqa and Musumba, will play on Friday 29 April, whilst on Sunday 1 May, Colin Stetson will be performing from 8pm- though it is expected that if the licence is granted, there will be plenty of additional DJ slots announced for the bank holiday weekend.

There will be a hearing tomorrow where three elected councillors will decide whether or not the application for the music licence will be accepted.
