Dishoom’s plans to open in Leeds have taken a major step forward this week.

The beloved Indian restaurant group has had planning permission granted to transform the former Flannels site.

The Grade II-listed site on Vicar Lane will be transformed from its days as a department store into a magnificent restaurant.

Dishoom is inspired by the Irani cafes of 1960s Bombay, which were meeting places for people from all walks of life.

First opening in London, it now has restaurants dotted all over the UK including a huge site in Manchester.

Dishoom also has a branch of smaller, more wet-led restaurants called Permit Rooms.

The group is famed for its lavish and grand interiors, as well as its home-style curries, grills and breakfasts including its legendary bacon naans.

It’s also famed for having queues out the door, especially down in London, but hands out hot chai and umbrellas to those in the queue.

And now it’s finally Leeds’ turn to get a Dishoom, with planning permission now granted for work to begin on the huge city centre site.

The restaurant group said in a planning report that their ‘ethos and brand’ is ‘closely aligned with the character and potential of this location’, according to the YEP.

They wrote: “The application site offers the ideal setting to deliver a new Dishoom restaurant, combining a vibrant local setting within the city centre with an ideal heritage site.”
