The UK’s oldest nightclub is in Halifax – and now they’re campaigning for a blue plaque

An all-new fundraiser has been set up which aims to crown the UK's oldest nightclub with its very own blue plaque.

Situated in Halifax, Acapulco Club, has been providing clubbers and night out lovers with live music and entertainment for 65 years.

Alongside offering 75p drinks to any guests before 11pm and a whole host of DJs playing out beats and bangers on their mezzanine-floor decks, Acapulco has created lots of happy memories too.

This West Yorkshire cultural hub attracted lots of media attention back in 2022 when the club auctioned off pieces of its spiral carpet for just £20.

Now, this Halifax nightlife institution is giving itself a massive pat on the back by setting up a fundraiser for its very own blue plaque.

Working alongside Halifax BID and Halifax Civic Trust, this living piece of Halifax history is recognising its contributions to this West Yorkshire town and clubbing culture.

Commonly referred to as "Acca", the club prides itself on "Welcoming dancers before man landed on the Moon, before the M62 motorway transformed our region, and before colour television arrived in British homes."

The cost of a blue plaque is £650 and any excess funds that are raised will be donated to Halifax Street Angels - a local charity which works alongside the night-time economy to keep partygoers safe.

Acapulco is encouraging anyone who has visited the nightclub over its 65 year period to donate and also provide any memories or photos they have shared within this venue.

Some of the famous faces that have graced this legendary clubbing hotspot include Katie Price and her son Harvey, Joey Essex, as well as an array of Love Island and Big Brother stars.

The Acapulco Club has even welcomed 80's pop royalty courtesy of a visit from George Michael... the tribute act of course.

Pints of Knowledge, Callum Campbell’s fastest-growing event, is coming to Leeds city centre this summer

The pub night that's packing out venues across the UK is coming to Leeds.

Let us introduce you to Pints of Knowledge, a phenomenon founded by Callum Campbell that has built a social media following of more than 160,000 people.

This is different to your average night out, it's a chance to meet new people and spark interesting conversation all in the relaxing surroundings of a pub.

The event has attracted thousands to its unique mix of expert talks, conversation and community in pubs across the UK.

And if you're looking to get in on the action then you're in luck, because Pints of Knowledge is arriving at The Wardrobe on Sunday 9 August.

So, what can you expect? From landmark legal history and the hidden pressures behind big systems to the evolving language of gaslighting and radical cinema, Sunday's Leeds programme will demonstrate exactly why Pints of Knowledge has struck such a chord with audiences across the UK.

Founder Callum Campbell, who has spent more than a decade producing live events across Britain, said bringing the concept to Leeds was the natural next step - and we're so happy he thought so.

He said: "I've always wanted to bring Pints of Knowledge to more cities across England, and Leeds has such a strong appetite for ideas and conversation. Watching this grow has been amazing, and I can't wait to bring it here.

"As more people look for experiences beyond a traditional night out, Pints of Knowledge offers something different: expert speakers, thought-provoking conversations and the chance to meet new people, all in the relaxed surroundings of a pub.

"People still love going to the pub, but they're looking for more from the experience. Pints of Knowledge is about hearing incredible stories, asking questions, meeting interesting people and leaving having learned something new."

The Pints of Knowledge programme at The Wardrobe will look like this:

  • 12pm - Human rights lawyer Mahnoor Omer presents '10 Legal Cases that Changed History'.
  • 2pm - Georgina Shute asks 'Why billion-pound systems are built by people who can't finish their to-do lists'.
  • 4pm - Isobel Logan explores 'Gaslighting: The Evolution of a Concept Across Art, Relationships and Politics'.
  • 6pm - Angelos Koutsourakis will examine 'Third Cinema, The Global South & Climate Change'.

Campbell added: "One hour you can be unpacking landmark legal cases, the next you're hearing about the psychology behind gaslighting, before finishing the day exploring cinema and climate change. That's what makes Pints of Knowledge different.

"This is just the beginning. We've seen an incredible response across the UK, and we're excited to build on that by bringing Pints of Knowledge to more cities across the country.”

Peter Kay at First Direct Arena – tickets, times and more for UK tour

Bolton-born comedian and entertainer Peter Kay is performing the final leg of his current UK arena tour with a series of charity shows.

Throughout his career, Kay has written and starred in various TV shows including Phoenix Nights, Max And Paddy's Road To Nowhere and Peter Kay's Car Share.

Alongside this, the Greater Manchester comedian has played a variety of arena shows across the UK, including at Leeds' very own First Direct Arena like 'Mum Wants a Bungalow Tour' and 'Better Late Than Never'.

And let's not forget his successful venture as a recording artist collaborating with Tony Christie on '(Is This The Way To) Amarillo' or alter-ego Geraldine's string of singles 'The Winner's Song' and 'Once Upon A Christmas Song'.

Are there any tickets left for Peter Kay at First Direct Arena?

Peter Kay is coming to Leeds city centre on Friday 24 July and luckily there's a handful of tickets still up for grabs, although we expect this event to sell out. Tickets are available HERE.

And, the money from the tickets you purchase will be split between the 12 charities that the Brit comedy legend has chosen such as Children With Cancer UK, Teenage Cancer Trust, Breast Cancer UK and more.

What are the stage times for Peter Kay in Leeds?

Anyone heading to the 'Better Late Than Never; The Final Show' can expect doors to open from 6pm with Peter Kay set to take to stage at 8pm.

First Direct Arena has a strict curfew of 11pm meaning you can laugh your socks off and still get tucked up under the covers before the clock hits midnight.

Located on Dyer Street next to Leeds City Bus Station and approx. 15min walk from first direct arena and is wheelchair friendly.

Support and help for any persons with a disability is available as the station is a registered ‘Safe place’ to come into and ask for assistance.

Nearest Train Station

Leeds City Station on New Station Street is around a 15min walk from first direct arena and a major hub on the national, regional and local rail network providing connections to a wide variety of destinations.

Parking

Hiring Bikes in Leeds 

If you’re looking to hire a bike in Leeds, here are some of the best options you can try:

  • Beryl bikes – you’ll find the ‘Leeds City Bikes’ from Beryl stationed throughout the city. These are all e-bikes, and they’re available to hire on a pay-as-you-go basis. It costs £1 to unlock the bikes, and then 16p per minute to use them. We’d say these are great for zipping around the city and getting from A to B.
  • Talio – for a wider selection of electric bikes to choose from, Talio based at Buslinthorpe Green is a great option. From this company, you can hire cruiser bikes, mountain bikes, and cargo bikes. Prices start from £20 per day for rental, but if you’re hiring for a month or longer you’ll get a good discount.
