A 24-hour yellow weather snow warning has been issued by the Met Office from 6am today.
After what has been a relatively warm winter, blankets of snow are expected to fall across Leeds today and the surrounding areas.
The 24-hour yellow weather warning has been issued from 6am today, Thursday 8 February, to 6am tomorrow Friday 9 February.
A prolonged period of snowfall, which in some cases will be heavy, is expected to fall across West Yorkshire which may cause disruption to travel and traffic.
The Met Office has also warned that in some cases, rural communities could be cut off and mobile phone coverage and power could be affected.
The temperatures will plummet and remain low throughout the day and night, where the snow will be replaced by heavy rain.
The Met Office website currently states for today: “Outbreaks of rain and snow moving north to all areas by late morning. Snow likely over modest high ground, heavy at times, but initially a rain and snow mix at low levels, increasingly turning to rain later. Becoming windy. Cold. Maximum temperature 4 °C.”
And for tonight: “Outbreaks of rain and snow continue overnight, snow increasingly becoming confined to the highest ground, with rain for many by dawn. Windy, exacerbating the cold feel. Minimum temperature 1 °C.”
