Wagamama is swapping virgin plastics for sustainable packaging

“Reducing our use of virgin plastics is a complicated mission – but one we have been dedicated to for four years. This has been driven by the belief that we needed do better for our guests, teams and the planet.”

Wagamama has announced that it will be removing up to 330 tonnes of virgin plastics by launching a “new more sustainable delivery packaging solution“.

The new packaging has already begun and will be distributed across all restaurants and delivery kitchens, including Leeds Trinity by October 2022.

The news comes as Wagamama makes a bid to help tackle the world’s increasing plastic pollution problem. This will lead to replacing more than eight million delivery bowls with new packaging using recyclable material.

In turn, this will make the packaging of Wagamama’s ever-popular katsu curry, 62% less carbon intensive and a whole lot better for the planet.

Wagamama CEO Thomas Heier has commented on the new commitment to the planet: “We are in a fortunate position that wagamama is much-loved by consumers, but we know this comes with a huge responsibility.

“Reducing our use of virgin plastics is a complicated mission – but one we have been dedicated to for four years. This has been driven by the belief that we needed do better for our guests, teams and the planet.”

Four years of planning, and advice from leading plastic experts, UK waste collectors, has led to this massive swap for the restaurant chain.

Simon Ellin, president of the UK Recycling Association and leading expert who advised wagamama on the move to cPET said: “It’s incredibly encouraging to see businesses like wagamama take accountability for their waste and go to great lengths to research and understand the complex nature of the UK recycling landscape. There’s so much misinformation and false claims about where rubbish goes, you really need to take the time to fully understand the problem

Wagamama will also launch a ‘Bowl Bank’ scheme, where customers can return their bowls as part of a dedicated programme created in response to the varied practices of the UK waste streams.

This initiative will be is thought to be in every Wagamama across the UK, including Leeds Trinity, by October 2022.
