Saltburn’s iconic Cliff Tramway has ranked at the very top of the list for the UK’s most popular seaside attractions.
The delightful coastal town Saltburn-by-the-sea boasts many attractions, from the breathtaking cliffs to the last remaining pier in Yorkshire…and of course the Cliff Tramway.
The Seaside Heritage Network’s first annual ‘Top Ten Bucket and Spade List’ ranks the most popular seaside attractions in the UK and yes, you guessed it – the tramway has been crowned number one.
The Cliff Tramway is infact the oldest water-balanced cliff funicular in Great Britain, and the second oldest in the world. Some pretty impressive stats if you ask us.
The Saltburn attraction beat many big hitters to get to the number one spot, from Blackpool Tower and Morecambe Winter Gardens to the South Cliff Gardens in Scarborough.
The ranking was voted for by members of the public and shows just how valuable these historical features are to towns such as Saltburn.
Deputy leader and cabinet member for climate change, environment and culture, Cllr Carrie Richardson said: “This latest award for the Cliff Tramway comes hot on the heels of it receiving the accolade of being among the top 10% of listings on TripAdvisor’s Travellers’ Choice Awards.
“Both awards are a clear recognition of the hard work and dedication of the team who provide a great experience for visitors and how highly regarded this charming seaside attraction is by locals and visitors to the area. I would like to thank everyone who took the time to vote for the Cliff Tramway to beat off some really strong opposition.”
