Flabbergasted Yorkshire dad quoted £71,000 for a week’s holiday in Cornwall

He’s called the extortionate quote for the three-bedroom house in St. Ives “a p*ss take”

A Tory councillor from East Riding in Yorkshire has slammed a Cornish staycation firm as “a p*ss take” after being quoted £71,000 for a week-long staycation with his family.

Father of three Councillor Paul Nickerson took to Twitter to vent his frustration after he discovered a holiday let in Cornwall charging guests £10,000 a night.

The quote for a week-long stay at the property came to £71,627 – more than double the average annual salary of a worker in the UK.

The quote was for a three-bedroom property in St. Ives, a popular bolt-hole for city-dwelling southerners, particularly those close to London.

Councillor Nickerson was searching for a summer break starting in mid-August for him and his wife and three young sons.

The family often has a staycation in the UK, but when searching this year he noticed that prices were more than double what they usually cost.

At first, he thought it was a mistake but quickly realised that wasn’t the case.

Alongside the house Cllr Nickerson initially pointed out, he found the company had another nine Cornwall lets listed on its site at similarly eye-watering prices. Another five-bedroom cottage listed by the company totals £8,515 for the same week starting 14th August.

House prices in the town have increased steeply in recent decades due to a popular trend for city dwellers to purchase second homes here, but it seems that holiday let prices have skyrocketed to ridiculous levels since the pandemic.

At the time of writing, it seems the holiday let listing has been taken down by the property owners but there are still plenty of overpriced lets to be found on the website.

Better off pitching a tent around here we reckon.
