Doctor Who’s Jodie Whittaker to step down in 2022

The 13th doctor has revealed she’ll be leaving the iconic BBC series next year

Yorkshire actor Jodie Whittaker has revealed she will be leaving her role on Doctor Who next year.

Having made history on the BBC show as the first woman to play the Time Lord, she had now revealed she will stop working on the cult hit in Autumn of 2022 along with showrunner Chris Chibnall.

Before this, though, they’ve got some solid specials lined up for us next year – not to mention plans for Whittaker to star in a new 6 part series before making her final exit.

Chibnall, meanwhile, has been leading the show since 2017 and was the one who appointed Whittaker to replace Peter Capaldi in the Time Lord role.

It’s not currently clear who will be replacing Whittaker on the show, but then there’s still time for all that to be revealed.

“I will carry the Doctor and the lessons I’ve learnt forever,” said Whittaker in a statement as she paid tribute to the whole Dr Who team as well as Chris Chibnall.

“My heart is so full of love for this show, for the team who make it, for the fans who watch it and for what it has brought to my life.

“And I cannot thank Chris enough for entrusting me with his incredible stories. We knew that we wanted to ride this wave side by side, and pass on the baton together. So here we are, weeks away from wrapping on the best job I have ever had. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to express what this role has given me. I will carry the Doctor and the lessons I’ve learnt forever.

“I know change can be scary and none of us know what’s out there. That’s why we keep looking. Travel hopefully. The universe will surprise you. Constantly.”

In the final six-part series before she departs, Whittaker will be joined by Mandip Gill as Yaz and a new character called Dan, played by comedian John Bishop.
