Elland Road stadium expansion Leeds United

Leeds United Football Club have officially submitted the planning application for their expansion of the Elland Road stadium.

With the Whites on their way back to the Premier League, now is as good a time as any to redevelop the legendary home ground and hopefully help establish their standing as a top-flight club with staying power.

That being said, it only seems right that a club with a history like Leeds and a ground as iconic as Elland Road gets a glow-up fitting of the first division.

Plans for the expansion of the stadium are now secret and have been in the pipeline for some time, but now the project details have been handed over to Leeds City Council, it’s about to get very real very soon.

Speaking in an official statement on the club website, Leeds United confirmed the submission of documentation on Tuesday, 8 July.

“This follows the conclusion of thorough public consultations throughout April, May and June,” the club said, “where supporters and the local community were invited to share feedback on the proposals.

“The results from the consultation questionnaire were overwhelmingly in favour, with 98% of respondents supporting the club’s overall proposals to enhance Elland Road Stadium.

“Comments raised throughout the consultation period have been reflected within the planning application.

Further results showed 97% of respondents supported an increase in capacity, 98% of respondents supported the design plans, and 99% of respondents supported the economic benefits being delivered locally.”

According to the plans, the redevelopment of the storied football stadium will see the estimated capacity exceed 53,000.

As we’re sure you’ll agree, the club are looking to keep plenty of that original character intact while increasing the number of matchgoers that kit fit in each end.

The update goes on to explain that both the West and North Stands will be expanded as part of the project, including not only additional general admission seats but more hospitality facilities as well.

With an estimated 26,000 supporters currently on the Leeds United season ticket waiting list, the work can’t get underway sooner.
