Independent cinema group ‘deeply saddened’ to close Sheffield cinema

What a shame.

Curzon Sheffield will sadly be closing its cinema at the end of the month.

Cinephiles, this one might hurt.

The much loved Curzon cinema on George Street, known for its eclectic film programme, comfortable atmosphere and great food and drink, has announced they are closing.

Announcing the news to Instagram, Curzon Sheffield said: "We are deeply saddened to inform you that we will be permanently closing Curzon Sheffield on 29 June 2026.

"The admissions have fallen below the level required to remain profitable, and therefore the company has made the difficult decision to close the cinema.

"On behalf of the entire Curzon Sheffield team, we’d like to thank our employees past and present for their dedicated service.

"Above all, we’re so grateful to you, our visitors, for all your support over the years. You made Curzon Sheffield such a vibrant, welcoming community. It has been a privilege to share great cinema with you."

Curzon's journey in the cinema industry dates all the way back to 1934, and since then they've opened sixteen venues across the UK which are designed and furnished individually and equipped with superior cinema technology.

In 2015, Curzon Cinemas became the first independent cinema group in the UK to pay the Living Wage and just a couple years later in 2017, the Curzon group received the prestigious award for Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema at the British Academy Film Awards.

So it's safe to say it's a real shame that Curzon Sheffield will no longer be in our city centre, but you've still got until Monday 29 June to visit and catch a flick.

You can book a seat here.
