But it arguably doesn’t get much better than a title like this as Leeds has now been named one of the best cities in the whole of Europe for 2025, thanks to a new ranking by Resonance Co.
This year, the global placemaking company’s research encompassed 128 cities across Europe with metropolitan area populations of 500,000 or more, and evaluated each of them based on 30 performance indicators and perception metrics derived from surveys of more than 7,500 respondents across 10 European countries.

Once each of these performance indictors had been evaluated, every city was given its own ‘Place Power Score’ to determine its ranking.
A city’s ‘Place Power Score’ examines three core dimensions – liveability, which takes into account things like housing affordability, healthcare access, green space, air quality, and cycling infrastructure; loveability, which encompasses culture, nightlife, culinary scenes, and more; and prosperity, which includes business environment, talent density, GDP per capita, airport connectivity, and more.
While Manchester may have missed out on both the top 10 and top 20, considering it’s a top 100 list, our city has claimed the respectable 47th spot, beating out mega cities such as Venice, Nice, Athens, and loads more.
In fact, 18 British cities are included in the top 100.

Explaining why Leeds has been ranked, Resonance Co said in its city description: "Following its ambitious Leeds 2023 Year of Culture, the city has doubled down on long-term investments to match its creative clout. The airport is undergoing a £100- million terminal expansion, with the first phase opening this summer to accommodate rising visitor demand (and improve on its tepid #79 Airport ranking).
"That’s just one of many hospitality developments shaping the skyline. Hyatt is debuting two hotels— Hyatt Place and Hyatt House—at Sovereign Square near the rail station, offering 305 rooms, rooftop dining and extended-stay amenities. Premier Inn’s parent Whitbread is expanding its city footprint with two new hotels, including a 143-room property as part of the Kirkgate redevelopment.
"These moves ride the momentum built during the city’s culture-filled 2023, including concerts, festivals and storytelling, and cement its legacy as a nightlife capital (#24). Leeds’s six universities help sustain its reputation for student-fuelled creativity and economic vitality.
"Roundhay Park remains a massive outdoor draw, and Leeds ranks in our Top 10 for Green Space (and #11 for Air Quality). The city’s skilled workforce and academic engine helped secure its designation as England’s third Investment Zone, expected to generate 2,500 new jobs and unlock £220 million by decade’s end."
Which city took the title of the best city in Europe though? Well unfortunately, we have to give it to the southerners on this one, as London took the top spot.
But at least it’s an impressive win for the UK, if nothing else.
Work to stabilise buildings on Lower Kirkgate was set to begin this week, but has now been delayed.
Back in 2024, Lower Kirkgate in Leeds city centre was closed following the partial collapse of a building, leaving one of the city's oldest streets inaccessible.
Since then, the street has remained closed while plans were developed to address the structural issues affecting the buildings.
Last week, almost two years after the initial incident, the council confirmed that a contractor had been appointed to carry out the work and was due to start this week.

However, this work has now been delayed due to the contract awards awaiting finalisation.
The buildings are privately owned, but Leeds City Council says it will step in to carry out the stabilisation work to prevent further deterioration and protect the historic properties.
A spokesperson for Leeds City Council said: “We are pleased that, following months of careful planning and preparation, we are now in a position to begin stabilising these privately owned buildings.
“A contract is being awarded for the work and is expected to take around 20 weeks to complete.
"Work was provisionally due to start on Monday this week but some legal documentation relating to the contract award still has to be finalised and we anticipate that it will begin before the end of the month.
“It should be stressed that the situation on Lower Kirkgate is not of the council's making, with the owners of the buildings allowing their condition to deteriorate over many years and then failing to take the necessary steps to address the resultant structural issues.
“By stepping in and carrying out this work itself, the council will be able to arrest the deterioration of important heritage assets on one of Leeds’s oldest streets. As always, we thank the local community for their continued patience and support.”
We can't wait to see this area of town back up and thriving again.

Located in the airport's departure lounge, this new spot is designed to give passengers somewhere to sit back and relax whilst enjoying a proper meal before jetting off.
And just like your classic American diner, there’s plenty on the menu to get stuck into.

Early flight? Breakfast is available until 11am with options including fluffy waffles, French toast bites, chicken and waffles drenched in maple syrup as well as traditional cooked breakfasts and American-style bagels.
Those travelling later in the day can tuck into smash burgers, chicken wings, loaded hot dogs, gooey mac and cheese and even a BBQ platter complete with ribs, corn and wings.
There’s also a menu specifically designed for the little ones, featuring waffles, beans on toast and scrambled eggs on toast, alongside burgers, chicken tenders and mac and cheese throughout the day.
And if you fancy a drink before take-off, because it wouldn't be a trip to the airport without a tipple, Monty’s has that covered too.
There's freshly poured pints on offer as well as cocktails, or you can have the proper American experience with a 'hard shake' - their classic thick milkshakes but made boozy.

The space has been decked out in style, so much so that you'll forget you're in Yorkshire and think you've popped into a diner on Route 66.
Classic booth seating, red neon signs, hanging globe lights, all complete with a retro jukebox which you can even pop a song on.
