The Kaiser Chiefs were inspired by the town Menston when writing Highroyds.
The namesake High Royds, was a mental health unit on the border of Leeds and Bradford, which remained open from 1888 right up until 2003 and is now locally known as Chevin Park.
These days, many may be more likely to remember the 2007 lyrics "Running round Highroyds isn't fun / Just teenagers testing their courage" from Kaiser Chiefs' album, Yours Sincerely, Angry Mob.

Growing up in and around Menston, reminiscing about time gone by is natural for any group of friends, so naturally, when the Kaiser Chiefs were remembering the old town they spent their teenage years, it was only right to include those memories in the song Highroyds.
Now, LeedsLive reports that the Grade II listed site may make a return, not as a homage to the Leeds-own band, but into a residential estate that injects new live into the old building.
The planning application, made by Avant Homes, explains that after its numerous break-ins and vandalism, the new owners would be able to redevelop and maintain the land.

“The existing grounds are (an) ideal environment for residential living and will provide essential accommodations for generations to come whilst preserving and enhancing the existing heritage of the site and buildings.”
A much-loved pub and live music venue is struggling with a series of 'malicious' noise complaints, prompting a huge outpouring of support from music industry insiders.
The Golden Lion over in Todmorden is facing uncertainty amidst the complaints from 'some random'.
Matthanee 'Gig' Nilavongse, who runs the venue and its live music offering, said he's 'had enough' and believes The Golden Lion is being targeted.
He stressed that nothing in the venue - the sound system, sound proofing, or anything else in its set-up - has changed since the noise complaints started.
Gig also added that people have been travelling from across the UK and even further afield to attend its events, benefitting the wider community of businesses and local economy.
He added: "Bank holiday next weekend and I'II not tolerate the threat from anyone."
Hundreds of people, including industry names like Sacha Lord, Luke Cowdrey, and Hot Chip's Joe Goddard, have voiced their support for the grassroots venue.
Sacha Lord offered his help fighting the complaints, then added: "I'm sick to death of these NIMBYS who threaten businesses and jobs."
Chelsea Teesdale, head of marketing for the Warehouse Project and Parklife, said: "Sorry you're going through this. The golden lion means so much to many. I go to all kinds of gigs and venues, nothing is quite like the magic of your home."
And Nite School Manchester wrote: "So sorry to hear you're going through this. What you've built at The Golden Lion for the people of Tod (& far beyond!) is a guiding star to us Gig, and we'll be doing everything we can to support you & the team."
Following on from this heartwarming display of affection for the venue, Gig added: "Thank you for all supports near and far, you're close to my heart.
"The show must go on, I'm not back down until the door is close."

Singer-songwriter and social media star Alex Warren is visiting First Direct Arena, Leeds, for two nights of out of the 'Ordinary' live music.
One of the founding members of the TikTok group, Hype House, which also included fellow pop performer Addison Rae, Warren has gone on to receive global recognition for his contributions to music.
Born in California, it's no surprise his music has managed to catapult into the mainstream as he's been mastering content creation since he was 10 on YouTube.
His music journey began back in 2021, when he released music as an independent artist in 2021 before signing a record deal one year later, dropping the chart-topping 'Ordinary' in 2025.
Now, Alex Warren prepares for his biggest UK tour to date, and he's playing two shows right here in Leeds at the 13,500 seater First Direct Arena in April and May.

Beryl bikes: you’ll find the ‘Leeds City Bikes’ from Beryl stationed throughout the city. These are all e-bikes, and they’re available to hire on a pay-as-you-go basis.
