£2 bus fare cap to be introduced across West Yorkshire this week

The new fare will come into effect on Sunday.

From Sunday 4 September 2022, anyone making a journey by bus shouldn’t need to pay more than £2 per journey.

This is thought to reduce costs by up to £1.20 per single journey, and those using the MCard app will see that they are able to make unlimited journeys for £4.50.

Introduced by Mayor of West Yorkshire Tracy Brabin, the new bus journey prices, known as ‘The Mayor’s Fares’ could save up to £500 per year.

New prices also span across all payment options. A DaySaver will cost £4.50 for one day, but for three days passengers will pay £13.50. This extends to a monthly bus pass, which has a new price of £85.90 and annual cost of £944.90.

The new Mayor’s Fares will be rolled out from Sunday 4 September 2022, and will cover the full West Yorkshire region.

Tracy Brabbin has commented: “We’re in a cost of living crisis, I promised you cheaper tickets. I’m delivering”.

This means that almost all journeys made within the West Yorkshire area won’t cost more than £2, regardless of what route you take, which service operator you use and where your destination is located, as long as its within West Yorkshire. The only exceptions to this is that the offer does not apply to Park & Ride services, football services and other event specials.

This comes after a series of bus far offers, including the free bus initiative. Last October, West Yorkshire buses were free to use on the first day of COP26 to raise awareness for climate-efficient transport, and again to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
