Plans revealed for a new hotel to go up at Leeds Kirkgate Market
Leeds City Council has revealed that plans for a new hotel in Kirkgate Market.
The initial proposals are going to go before the council's city plans panel at a meeting next Thursday 22 June 2023.
The council reports that it has been exploring the potential for a hotel on George Street as part of 'the wider regeneration of the area'.
This comes after the council announced a shipping container style market could be making an appearance in the outdoor area of the existing Leeds Kirkgate Market.
Leeds City Council has announced that the plans to add a new addition to the outdoor market space will move forward, and next week senior councillors will be asked to approve a ‘package of measures’ that could start to see the proposal come to life.
The idea for the container-style shipping container was first announced late last year, and last month the council was given the ‘green light’ to launch a consultation exercise and find out what the public think of the proposal.
Subject to the feedback from the panel members at the meeting have been decided, next steps will be taken towards the development of the hotel.
The full planning application is expected to be submitted in July.
Councillor Jonathan Pryor, Leeds City Council's executive member for economy, culture and education, said:
“The area around Leeds Kirkgate Market – and indeed the whole eastern side of the city centre – has undergone some massive and positive changes in recent years.
“The proposed hotel would add another vibrant piece to the jigsaw by contributing to the regeneration of George Street and acting as a visually-impressive linking point between Vicar Lane, the Eastgate roundabout and Quarry Hill.
“These plans also underline our commitment to the market and its future as a much-loved fixture on our retail scene that is now attracting more than 400,000 visitors a month.”
