Beloved Leeds indie, Wapentake, is saved from closure following local investment

“As a local lad, I am proud to be part of the rescue of this well-loved pub.”

In an incredible turn of events, Kirkgate’s ‘little piece of Yorkshire’ will be re-opening this week.

Many of our hearts were broken last Tuesday when Wapentake sadly announced they would be closing their doors.

But in news that has lifted our spirits higher than you could ever imagine, Wapentake will now be re-opening following investment from local bar group Inglenook.

Announcing to Instagram, Wapentake said: Earlier this week we announced our closure with an extremely heavy heart, but we have some bloody good news. Despite the recent hardships and the dramatic collapse downt’ road, our Little Piece Of Yorkshire will be staying open! We survive!!!

“We are thrilled to share that thanks to the support of our incredible community and the dedicated efforts of Ignition, Wap, which spearheaded the renaissance of Kirkgate—Leeds’ oldest street—will continue to serve you all.”

Cue a collective sigh of relief from almost everyone in Leeds.

The post continued: “We will keep you all updated and hopefully be back bigger and better than ever! This has been a very hectic week and the takeover is sudden so please bare with us while we settle back in and welcome Ignition. We’ll be reopening our doors on Wednesday at 9am!”

So now it’s more important than ever to pop down and visit, in an effort to make sure closures like this don’t happen again (even if they do reopen).

Te CEO of Inglenook Group and Operator at the Ship and Regent said: “As a local lad, I am proud to be part of the rescue of this well-loved pub. It is so important that we re-energise our towns and cities and keep investment moving forward. Please join us in celebrating the re-opening of Wapentake!

Famed for their iconic Yorkshire pudding burgers and stunning Sunday roasts, this little oasis is the perfect spot for friendly service and brilliant food.

Trust us, it’s one you don’t want to miss out on and we’re so happy it’s back.
