World-renowned artist David Hockney has just been commissioned to complete new artwork as part of a £7m tourism campaign to attract more visitors to the capital.
Newly re-elected London mayor Sadiq Khan revealed the work earlier this week, branding it “brilliant”.
The first in a series of artwork projects commissioned as part of his ‘Let’s Do London’ campaign, it sees the acclaimed Bradford-born artist redraw the London Underground roundel in yellow and purple.
Twitter users had a lot to say about the works – not all of it nice.
“Looks like a seven year old won a competition,” said one user, whilst another chimed in “it’s a shame London isn’t packed with creative artists who’ve had a really rough year and could’ve used both the money and exposure”.
Others have simply tried their hand at creating their own versions of Hockney’s art, with varying degrees of success.
The appearance of the work follows the recent premier of another Hockney piece, a new video artwork titled Remember You Cannot Look At The Sun Or Death For Very Long.
Showing on the Piccadilly Lights screen in Piccadilly Circus every night throughout the month of May, it depicts an animated sunrise that was created on Hockney’s ipad.
The video piece is also being shown on screens in New York, Los Angeles, Seoul and Tokyo.
