Scarborough has been named one of the best seaside towns in the UK, with its “old is sexy” beach given a shoutout.
In what is grim reading for the North, The Telegraph has this week published a list of what it considers to be the top 20 best and worst seaside towns in the UK, giving each place on the list a ranking out of 100 – but Scarborough hasn’t faired too badly in the grand scheme of things.
The North Yorkshire resort has come in at number 11.
The only Yorkshire entry to feature on the list, Scarborough is celebrated for its regeneration in recent years, while still managing to stay true to its roots.
With a somewhat respectable ranking of 39/100, claiming number 11 on The Telegraph’s list effectively means Scarborough has been named one of the best seaside towns the UK has to offer.
According to The Telegraph, “old is sexy” in Scarborough – or ‘Scarbados’, as it’s often affectionately referred to – as it not only claims to be the country’s first-ever seaside resort, but the town is also apparently home to Britain’s most ancient dwelling, and is “the best place to retire” too.
Giving a run-down of why Scarborough has been named one of the best seaside town’s in the UK, The Telegraph explains: “Scarbados is said to be the best place to retire.
“The town’s famous playwright, Alan Ayckbourn is still writing funny, stimulating plays at 83. The Britannia-owned Grand hotel looks more grandiose than it is, but Bike and Boot showcases a more contemporary approach to holiday accommodation and the town has a B&B declared ‘best in the world’ on TripAdvisor for two years running.”
