Prince William makes surprise trip to Leeds to visit Afghan refugees

The royal met with refugees living in temporary hotel accommodation in the city on Tuesday morning

Prince William made a surprise trip to Leeds on Tuesday to visit with refugees who had been evacuated from Afghanistan.

People reports that the royal made the trip to Leeds in order to meet with a number of Afghans living in Leeds, who have been forced to flee their home country following the fall of Kabul to the Taliban on 15 August.

He arrived in Leeds on Tuesday morning for the surprise visit, making his way to a local hotel where a number of people are currently being housed in temporary accommodation.

During the visit, the Prince watched children play with toys in what appears to be a hotel function room dressed in bunting for the occasion.

He also learnt about the kind donations made by the local people of Leeds and further afield ahead of the refugees arriving in the city, which included clothes, blankets and other essentials.

The Royal also spoke with some of the refugees, hearing about challenges that many have faced as they try to rebuild their lives anew 3,548 miles away from home.

People said that Prince William “wanted to see and hear firsthand about the efforts being made by local authority organizations, charities and community bodies to help them settle.”

According to a statement made by his office at Kensington Palace to the publication, his visit “underlines the welcoming and diverse communities in Britain who have been uniting to help others”.
