It’s coming home: UK and Ireland to bid for 2028 Euros- but will drop 2030 World Cup bid

The joint bid was announced this morning.

The English Football Association has confirmed it will drop its attempts to host the 2030 World Cup, instead bidding for the Euro 2028 games.

The four home nations and the Republic of Ireland have joined forces to put in a joint bid for the games after a successful feasibility study into co-hosting the tournament.

The idea is that the games will be played across England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

Originally the five nations had hoped to put in a bid to host the 2030 Word Cup, but it is thought that this would be too difficult to manoeuvre.

The World Cup is also expecting a joint-bid from Spain and Portugal as it has been reported that UEFA is only expected to back one European candidate.

The South American bid is expected to come from Uruguay, as the country wish to tie the 2030 games in with the centenary of the first World Cup, which was held in Uruguay in 1930.

A statement from the Football Association has been released, stating: “On balance, the five associations have decided to focus solely on an official bid to host Uefa Euro 2028, and have agreed not to bid for the 2030 Fifa World Cup.

“It would be an honour and a privilege to collectively host Uefa Euro 2028 and to welcome all of Europe.”

If successful, we can only imagine what the streets of Leeds will look like during the games. During summer 2021 at the 2020 Euros, fans would line the city centre and suburbs, as if time stopped for the games.

So will we be coming home in 2028?

The closing date for applications is the Wednesday 23 March, so there’s plenty of time for the logistics of the event to be organised.

More information is expected to be released in the lead-up to the deadline.
