Legendary Leeds restaurant announces shock closure following ‘challenging’ few years

What a shame.

A beloved Japanese restaurant in Meanwood has permanently closed after over a decade.

Since opening back in 2013, HanaMatsuri has become a sought after dining destination with diners travelling from far and wide to dine at their charming restaurant on Meanwood Road.

Specialising in high quality omakase, meaning a multi-course Japanese dining experience where the chef picks what you will eat, this was unlike anything you’d find in the city.

Back in 2023 they opened a more casual, laidback spot in the city centre called Sushi Nakamura but from now on this will sadly be their only offering

Announcing the news to Instagram, the statement read: “Please note that HanaMatsuri in Meanwood is now permanently closed.

“Thank you to everyone who has visited and supported HanaMatsuri over the years. Meanwood has been a great location for us and we have had great local businesses as neighbours. We continue with @sushinakamuraleeds in the city centre and hope to welcome you there.

“Striking a balance between working across two sites without losing any of the quality in what we offer has been challenging. It has been a difficult decision to close Hana Matsuri at Meanwood but it feels right for our small family owned business.

“Thank you again for your support, it has meant a lot to us and continues to motivate us.”

We’re absolutely gutted to hear about the news, but we’ll definitely be supporting Sushi Nakamura on Eastgate to get our sushi fix.
